Even though the drag breakfast is the highlight, Abbi’s awkwardness and Ilana’s nuttiness are still a big part of the storyline, and the endearing yet apathetic unawareness of Saul keeps the audience on their toes. The titular women in Girls aren’t a particularly likable bunch.
The episode ends with Abbi and Ilana taking a bath together and smoking a joint, mulling over their love-related troubles. Abbi is finally being honest with Ilana in terms of her feelings for Trey, which ends up not being a problem at all for Ilana. Ilana, on the other hand, has let her guard down as she begins to admit that a monogamous relationship may be in the cards for her. Broad City is back with its fifth and final season, and the first episode reminds us that though the show is as funny as ever, things are changing for Abbi and Ilana. Though their eyeballs are still animated, they successfully deliver the macarons to the party. This episode’s fantastical visuals and wacky discussions make for a trip almost as exciting as Abbi and Ilana’s. After realizing their addiction to “the matrix” has gotten out of control, Abbi and Ilana leave their phones at home and rollerskate to Ilana’s brother Elliot’s dog’s wedding in Central Park.
As they dance and gyrate, the girls start having a real conversation about their friendship, how much they are going to miss each other, as well as their fears surrounding their codependency. The juxtaposition of their actions and what they are discussing is really heart wrenching; it emphasizes just how sad the girls are to be separated. The Writers Guild Foundation listed the script for the first season finale „The Last Supper” as one of the best scripts of the 2010s, describing the show as „a benchmark for writing about buddies”.
